The Rotary Club of Woonsocket developed the "Birthday in a Bag" Program to ensure that every child has a birthday celebration, regardless of their living circumstances.

The Club coordinates the "Birthday in a Bag" Program with School Social Workers, who identify the students and families who may not, for one circumstance or another, realistically be able to celebrate their birthday with a party. Students are typically either in foster care, homeless, or identified as financially disadvantaged.

The “Birthday in a Bag” contains a present for the child, snacks, juice boxes, cutlery, a tablecloth, streamers and a certificate for a large cheese pizza. Because of school privacy guidelines, the Rotary does not know who the families are, so the Club buys the cake with a tube of icing for the parents to write the child’s name on the cake themselves.

The Rotary Club of Woonsocket initiated the Birthday in a Bag Program in Woonsocket in 2021 and has distributed over 40 bags each school year. Based on the success of the Woonsocket program, the club has extended the program to support Burrillville in 2023.
