The goal of the Woonsocket Rotary Adopt-A-Senior program is to ensure every resident at the Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Burrillville enjoys a Christmas Party and receives a Christmas present. Overlook provides gift requests from each resident, with a maximum dollar amount. Members of the Rotary club create gift giving tags for the resident’s request. In conjunction with participating restaurants Serio’s Pizza & Restaurant, Johnny’s Victory Diner and Gators Pub, the residents’ Christmas gift tags are hung at each restaurant. Patrons are encouraged to remove a gift tag and purchase the item requested by that senior. The Club then coordinated with the restaurants and staff at Overlook to make sure that all gift tags were returned, and all residents received a gift at the party. Club members contribute by purchasing extra gifts for new residents who arrived close to the party date.
In December, the Woonsocket Rotary host the Christmas party where every senior receives a gift given out by Santa and Mrs. Claus, played by Michael and Jane Dubois, while carols are sung by members of the Rotary. Residents are also served pastries provided by the Rotary Club.
For residents who cannot leave their rooms, Santa and Mrs. Claus make their way from the first floor to the second floor, greeting residents and dropping off gifts.
“There’s a lot of seniors who don’t have anyone, or you know anyone close enough by; they have who’s here, and we become their family,” said Lori Pendleton, administrator at Overlook.
“I just think it’s amazing that the community took the time to allow them to go in and let them present our building and our residents, and so many people took the gift tags, which is so nice that the community did that for us,” she added
